School governors share a commitment to supporting our school to be as effective as it can.
They do this by:
- setting the school’s strategic direction
- holding school leaders to account for improving the pupils’ education
- making sure the school’s budget is well spent for
There is free training, advice and guidance to governors available through Kirklees and the school. We also help recruit new volunteer governors for schools.
Our Governors attend regular meetings; some in the evening and some during the day. They talk to staff and children, discuss policies and ideas and monitor the budget.
Some come from professional backgrounds and others bring their knowledge and life experiences.
Our Governors, together with the rest of the school leadership and staff ensure that school does everything that it can to prepare all of our children for a successful and productive life in Britain in the 21st Century.

Mr A Laher - Chair of Governors/Co-opted Governor
I have been teaching for 19 years at Garforth Academy. My current role involves being an Assistant Principal and a Specialist Leader in Education (SLE) for Applied Learning, working across SPT Academies such as South Leeds and Manor Croft. I have previously been a governor at BBEC for five years and a governor at Purlwell for the past seven years, acting as Chair of Governors since September 2014.
Mrs K Vahed - Staff Governor
Mr U Mahmood - Co-opted Governor
My name is Usman Mahmood. I live just across the road from the school so I am easily accessible. I speak good English, Urdu, Punjabi, and a bit of Gujerati too. I went to Purlwell School myself as a child, as have many of my family over the years. My daughter is Year 2 and my son is in reception. They both love school and have learnt a lot at Purlwell.
I have been a secondary school teacher since 2003. I have a lot of experience in improving schools. I started my career as a Maths teacher at Shelley College in Huddersfield where I was promoted to “Coordinator of Innovative teaching and learning in Maths” as we moved towards the top of the Kirklees league tables. I moved to Birkdale High School as “Assistant Head of Maths”. GCSE Maths pass rate (A*-C) went up by over 20% in 3 years as we became the most improved school in Yorkshire. I have worked at Oakbank School in Keighley as Head of Maths for the last 4 years. The improvement in results was rapid and sustained. In June this year, I am starting work in Dewsbury at Westborough High School as Lead Practitioner in Maths.
I am always willing to listen to views of all members of the school community with enthusiasm, and voice your opinions at Governing Body meetings and visits to the school. If appropriate I will take immediate action and always get back to you swiftly on outcomes.
